Listening
Listening to one's body is crucial this early in the training season. What exactly does it mean to "listen to one's body?" Are we listening to our bones cracking as we bend into skating position? No! Listening to one's body is a subtle activity which often requires silence and inertia. It demands that we go "within" and feel our whole body. Yoga or mediation is a perfect vehicle for it. If you don't have time for these activities, try to get in touch with your whole self upon waking or before sleeping. Five minutes can be long for someone who never quiets their mind, body and soul. If meditation or yoga is too esoteric for you, that's OK, too. Instead, I recommend you practice your sport, at times, alone, in silence and in as much of a natural environment as possible so you can listen to the sounds of nature rather than the city. Listening to your body is as important as interval training. It is also the ultimate injury prevention method.
