Inline skating news, events, expert advice and more

Dear Inga,

Wow. What an amazing time we had at the Ottawa Inline Skating Festival last Sunday. While remnants of Ernesto made for a rainy weekend - Festival organizers, volunteers, sponsors and participants came out full force to skate, compete, have fun, test their mettle, make friends ... Congratulations to everyone!

Check out the Festival article below - and all the news on events, fundraisers, social activities and, my favourite, bearing advice!

Sept 16 - trip to Laurentians

Enjoy le petit train du nord with old and new friends

Our last excursion to Petit train du nord for the season is Saturday September 16. We will be skating from the train station in Labelle and skaters will choose their desired distance of up to 100k. After the skate we'll enjoy a great meal at the Labelle train station and compare notes.

Sept 30 - Turkey Roll

Raising money for the Food Bank
Turkey Roll

Enjoy blissfully smooth recreational paths, great National Capital scenery, superb fall foilage, and help The Ottawa Food Bank all at the same time.

The entire $25 registration fee is donated to the Ottawa Food Bank. They in turn can leverage every dollar donated into $5 worth of food. Registration at Dick Bell Park at 8:30 am, departure time at 9 am.

Gatineau Park open for skaters

Every Sunday until Nov 5

This just in: Sundays from 6 am to 10 am the 3.5 km road between P8 and P9 will be closed to motor vehicles - until November 5. The hills keep calling!

OISC Annual General Meeting

Saturday November 4, 2006

The massively fun, all important OISC awards dinner and dance and annual general meeting will take place November 4 at Sala San Marco on Preston Street.

Stay tuned for all the details!

NEW - Sunday social skates

Because we can't get enough

Your social committe has decided to host Sunday Social Skates until the snow flies. We will meet at the Champlain Bridge at Island Park Drive at 9:45 am and be off skating by 10:00 a.m.

The Wednesday social skate crowd is also still getting together. Keep checking our website for latest updates.

Amazing Festival

Memorable skating, great camraderie

No amount of rain could dampen the spirits of Festival skaters. On the contrary, a little environmental adversity makes for excellent stories! The 2 km kids race and the 5 km family fun race saw great competition and decisive finishing sprints from up and comers from Ottawa, Harriston and Gatineau. The kids faces made it clear: this is awesome fun.

The marquee event, the marathon, saw skaters taking on hair pin turns on Colonel By Drive with panache and care; appreciating the encouragement from volunteers and spectators; and being elated when they made it to the finish. Similarly, the lead event, 10 k, saw fun competition and much cooperation. The final event of the day is the 21 k- remarkably a number of skaters who had already competed in other distances, hurried to the start line for another 2 laps!

We are going to post skater's reports over the next few days. Meanwhile, check out the photo galleries: Steve's pics, Alicia's shots, Dan & Lee's gallery, Annick's collection.

Thanks to all of our sponsors for their support.

And, yes, we are already planning for next year. So mark OISF in your calendar for Labour day weekend and keep your eye on our website.

All about bearnings

When Donna asked about how to get her bearnings unstuck after the 42k in the rain, she got waaaaay more than ... well ... read foryourself: Ray's helpful "bearing puller" advice, the always reasoned voice of Mike , Jay's "el-cheapo" plier solution and - maybe most remarkable of all for its "committed" approach - Stephane's no-holds-barred attack - I'm still laughing about that one!

Canadians at World Championships

The Canadian world team competing in Korea this September includes three junior racers Jade Pauley, Jesse Pauley and Alex D'Mello as well as four seniors AJ Perrie, Andrew Hegarty, Peter Doucet, Sigrid Ziegler. Follow the action!

Our new web site and online store has been really well received. Robust, easy to use and chockful of inline skating information, club programming, event calendar, trips, expert articles and more.
