Dear Inga,
What a year it's been. We had some extraordinary
events, skaters everywhere are keeping our sport
vibrant and fun, rec, fit and speed skaters support
each other and we all learn together.
Volunteers and skaters are part of an amazing
community of friends and athletes. I'm glad to be a
part of this here in Ottawa and share both our club's
and our sports activities with you through our web
site and e-news.
This may well be the last regular e-news for 2006. I'll
try to put something out over the winter to keep in
touch, but for sure come March we'll get back
to "summer sports."

$1,000 raised for Ottawa Food Bank

Turkey Roll success
We had terrific weather to enjoy the spectacular fall
scenery and the smooth recreational paths for the
annual Turkey Roll. 31 participants raised $1,050 in
food and donations for the Ottawa Food Bank. This
represents a 50% increase in donations from last
year. Well done!

The Défi de L'Île de Montréal on October 21, 2006
The Défi de L'Île de Montréal (Montréal Island
Challenge) is a 128-kilometer race on inline skates
around the Island of Montréal. It has been held every
year since 1996 on the third Saturday in October.
Each year brings different challenges, new joys and
you are sure to know more about who you are than
you did before you started.
It's an amazing event! Unrivalled camaraderie among
skaters, the course is
fabulous, the organizers do a remarkable job and it's
not the dark you need
to worry about (6 am start), they light all the
important spots quite well - I've always
done it without a light just fine - Jan and I have
been there 4 times - each
time the experience of the event is completely
different. It's an effort far
more difficult and far more rewarding than any other
I've done skating.
Impossible to go and not have more friends in your
life afterwards.

Rod Wilmot has done a fine job building the web
community. Robert Fortier, his family and friends
have done anamazing jobin creating and running the
tour each year.
If you want to be inspired ... and, yes, test yourself
in a different more
mentally challenging way, not just physically.. it's the
place to be! They are still working on breaking the 5
hour barrier ... so for the ambitious there's plenty to
go for, too.

A2A Report
|
|
Mike Garvin
The course is held on open roads which wind through
the country side, but also pass through small villages
and suburbs. For the most part the course is uphill,
downhill...repeat. However, some of the down hills
are quite spectacular.
The age range of the
participants was from 15 well into the 60s. In case
you think being older is a disadvantage -- think
again! I was in a pack that caught up with Bob
Harwell (61), after we caught him, he sprinted to the
front (up hill) and started setting the pace for the
pack. He's a machine! Not only did he stay in front of
us, but he grabbed the back of a pack that passed
us.

Social, cross-training, deals ... whatever
|
|
As we head into the fall season, the club is looking
into activities that will complement inline skating.
Inline skaters love to ice skate, downhill ski and X-C
ski in the winter and we will be incorporating all of
these activities in the social calendar. The club has
checked out some terrific savings on passes for
these winter activities but some of these are time
dependent and you will need to act fast to benefit
from these.

Indoor inline skating

Frederic from Kineactif is again organizing indoor
skating activities. As a card carrying OISC member
you get a great discount for joining. The multi-sport
facility is great and quite centrally located ... in Hull
on Montcalm.
