Inline skating news, events, expert advice and more

Dear Michael,

Our club's 2007 board of directors has been hard at work through the winter imagining another awesome inline skating season for skaters here in Ottawa and our friends from across the continent.

I'm pleased to unveil a number of the initiatives in this first e-news of 2007!

Eddy Matzger comes to Ottawa

June 23 & 24, 2007

Join Eddy Matzger and other expert presenters for this weekend of fun learning for both your feet and your brain! This weekend is bursting with conference style learning covering sports nutrition, psychology, and technical training. When class is out you'll get to spend quality time learning to skate in a fun and motivating atmosphere from one of the most successful inline skaters and most popular coaches around...Eddy Matzger!

We have space for 100 skaters, preference goes to OISC club members until April 30. Out-of-town skaters are, of course, always welcome to join OISC and participate in all of our activities and take advantage of special offers to club members.

March 30 - OISC registration night

Come by St. Anthony's on Preston Street in Ottawa to get the full scoop on the upcoming season. Bring your friends, enjoy a drink, get caught up with inline buddies, hear all about the Eddy matzger weekend, take advantage of club specials and so much more.

Club programming

New concepts for 2007
slalom

We've been offering balanced spring/summer programming since 2001. This year we are placing an even stronger focus on having fun, meeting new friends and getting fit. Come out and skate with us, train with us to get ready for a personal best in a marathon, or enjoy our social events and group skates on Ottawa paths that end with some quality time at the local pubs. The club also organizes special skating events and trips, as well as a year ending charity event.

April 15 - Run (Skate) for Reach

The half is back
Skaters at AGM

On Sunday April 15th, start your skating season off with 21.1 km half marathon on the scenic Queen Elizabeth Drive in downtown Ottawa. A rare feat, we also are the last race to start at 11:45 am!

In light of the loss of the National Capital Race Weekend's inline marathon, we worked to get this skating event reinstated. So, come in out in droves and make sure inline skating stays front and centre.

Loss of May inline events at NCM

But inline skating in Ottawa remains strong!

Over the years Ottawa hosted the largest inline skating events during the National Capital Race Weekend (now the ING Ottawa marathon). As is often the case, as the running event has grown to 30,000 participants in numerous races, inline skating has been squeezed out - despite bringing well over 1,000 skaters together.

We have been working to make sure Ottawa remains central on the inline calendar: April 15 - Run for Reach
June 23 and 24 - Eddy Matzger weekend
September 2 - 3rd Annual Ottawa Inline Skating Festival

Important comunications tools

Closing yahoo group

In 2007 the OISC discussion group on Yahoo is being decommissioned. This discussion group will be replaced with the discussion groups available directly on the OISC web site. Because Yahoo and our Club web sites are separate, you'll have to register (free) to use the new discussion groups. Once the transition is complete, you will no longer be able to use the Yahoo discussion group, and no further messages will be posted on it.

Mileage Club and more

The OISC Mileage Club is designed to promote long distance recreational skating in a fun and challenging way.

There are many new features in the online log, from calorie calculator to weekly comparison reports and so much more.

Ray's Marathon Package

This PowerPoint slide package is a great summary of how to prepare for any inline marathon.

Our web site has been updated through the winter. It's chock ful of great information, articles, skating activities, videos, photos, discussions. You name it. So visit often and stay informed!
