2nd annual Centre Carmen Dragon Boat Festival
An invitation from Lynda Kennedy
Ever wanted to try your hand at paddling a dragon boat while participating in a worthwhile cause? Well, now's your chance, even if you don't have any experience!
This year I would like to invite the members of the club and their families and friends to form a OISC Dragon Boat team to participate in the 2nd annual Centre Carmen Dragon Boat festival at Leamy Lake. This all-day event takes place on Saturday, June 28th, 2008, rain or shine. Entries must be completed before May 20, 2008.
By entering, you support a non-profit organization in Gatineau called the centre Carmen. This organization offers professional nursing services and various therapies (like art, music, laugh therapies) free of charge to children and adults stricken by chronic degenerative diseases such as cancer, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and many, many more. Perhaps you've lost someone to cancer, or you know someone who has been stricken by any of these debilitating diseases. Perhaps you yourself are a survivor. More and more it touches every one of us in some way.
The centre relies on private (corporate and individual) donations every year to fund their program. The dragon boat festival is the centre's main source of funding.
Each participant must pay a $60.00 entry fee which includes 2 training sessions where professional trainers will teach you the ABC's of Dragon Boat paddling techniques. It also covers the rental of the dragon boats and the cost of the support team required to run the racing logistics. In addition to the entry fee, you are also required to raise at least $150.00 in donations. Tax receipts are provided for donations of $20.00 and more.
If participating doesn't interest you, we also need volunteers to help run the day's events and set up the day before.
You can find out more about the centre and the festival by visiting the centre's web site at www.centrecarmen.ca
Information seminars are being held at the centre for people who may be interested in participating. The next seminar is February 21, 7pm at the centre at 253 Bellehumeur in Gatineau. I will also invite someone from the organization to visit us after early in the spring after a couple of our skating sessions.
Please email lynda.kennedy@videotron.ca if you want to be part of the team, or if you want more information about how you can participate.
